For nearly 20 years, I have been working with children, youth, and families, supporting them in working towards being the best versions of themselves as individuals and as families. Throughout my career, one of the most common stressors faced by children, youth, and parents/caregivers is when separation/divorce becomes fraught with conflict and discord. Oftentimes, this results in parents/caregivers looking to the family court system to arrive at decisions regarding custody and access of minor children; and sometimes family court proceedings (by request of the judge or the parents) call for a Hear the Child report, a Views of the Child report, or a full section 211 report to support the court's decision making.
I am a member of the BC Hear the Child Society, a clinical counsellor, and former child protection worker. With kindness, curiosity, and gentleness, I have extensive experience interviewing children, youth, and parents/caregivers, as well as assessing the social/emotional, safety, and best-interest needs of minor children.
A Hear the Child report represents to the family court a child's thoughts and feelings for consideration in the decision making process. The report is provided in the child's own words (i.e., verbatim), and does not include an assessment of the child or the parents/caregivers, or any recommendations.
Hear the Child Report - $200 per hour
A Views of the Child report is similar to a Hear the Child report in that it is a representation of the child's thoughts, feelings, and experiences regarding their family situation. In a Views of the Child Report an assessment of the child's views is also provided. However, unlike a full section 211 report, no recommendations are provided. This type of report is typically preferable over a Hear the Child report when there are concerns for the well-being of the child, as the assessment component can look at such factors as parental alienation and/or coaching of the child.
Views of the Child Report - $200
A full section 211 report is a comprehensive report that assesses not just the child but the parents/caregivers as well. This represents the thoughts and feelings of the child, assesses the child's views, and assesses the parents' ability and willingness to meet the needs of the child. The preparation of this report often includes not only meeting with the child and the parents, but other family members and friends, teachers, counsellors, etc. as well. This report is extensive in nature, and includes professional recommendations.
